Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges, which are the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Meningitis is typically caused by an infection such as bacterial, viral, fungal, etc.

When the meninges become inflamed, the symptoms below may be present.


Meningitis Symptoms

Symptoms of meningitis may include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Neck stiffness (nuchal rigidity)

  • Confusion (altered mental status)

  • Seizures

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)

  • Rash (especially meningococcal meningitis)

  • Fatigue

  • Poor appetite
